Cold dismal day, with rain and snow all the time took flying visit to see my friend Mr. Moon from Rochester. Was hard at work all day making our [illegible] rolls, received another letter from Judie, hope soon to receive my mail regularly, must answer my mail tomorrow. Wrote short letter to Judie, late this evening. Vinsit qui ce cinicit. He conquers himself. vullies est indes arrina, The counterance is the under of the nmind. In sole Dev solux, in God alone in safety. Cold day, frage took a harty visit to see my friend Mr. Moon at the Governmnent Hospital at work through the day in [illegible] of sick and thrinded, did not have an opportunity to write this day. ------------------------------- December 21, Wednesday. Cold dismal day with rain and snow all the time. Took flying visit to see my friend Mr. Moon from Rochester, was hard at work all day making out clothing rolls, received another letter from Judie. Hope soon to receive my mail regularly, musty answer my mail tomorrow, wrote a short letter to Judie late this evening. “Vincit qui se vincit” (He conquers who conquers himself) “Vultus est index animi” (The countenance is the index of the mind) “In solo deo salus” (In God alone is safety) [4.] December 22, Thursday. Cold day, froze, took a hasty visit to see my friend Mr. Moon at the Government Hospital. At work through the day on reports of sick and wounded, did not have an opportunity to write this day. Note: 4. These sayings are from Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801), a Swiss poet and physiognomist.
