[written above date] Hospital near Stevensburgh Va. A cold but very beautiful day felt very much indisposed in the forenoon, but better towards evening. This is what should have been a day of rest. But it is sadly broken for from morning to night the sound of [illegible] could be heard all over camp. Feel much easier in my mind today read a little works called [illegible] wells Bible and was much pleased with it. Had a long talk with Dr. Munson on religious topics. No news from home. "'Now, it is gone: our brief hours post travel. Each with its thought or deed, to why or how great. But know-each parting hour given up a [illegible] dwell within us - an eternal now, anon." [written above date] Hospital near Stevensburgh Va. Another beautiful day but very cold. Felt much better than usual. Kept house for Dr. Munson he being absent at the [illegible] Hospital, the Medical Director of the Corps. visited the Hosp. today and examined the inmates, Gen. Warren is again in command of the 29 Corps. Gen. Hancock being [illegible] to Washington wrote to Prof. N. in the afternoon also wrote to Hudsen Tayler Bookseller Washington D.C. for Rebellion Record. No news from home, one of the men of my company was on a visit to us today he says the Rebels are compelled to have 3 lines of [illegible] to prevent desertion and that they are very insolent. ------------------------------ Jan.10, Sunday. A cold but very beautiful day, felt very much indisposed in the forenoon but better towards evening. Feel much easier in my mind to-day, read a little work called Cromwell’s Bible [20.] and was much pleased with it, had a long talk with Dr. Munson on religious topics. [21.] Jan.11, Monday. Another beautiful day but very cold. Felt much better than usual. Kept house for Dr. Munson, he being absent at the Div. Hospital. The medical director of the Corps visited the hosp to-day & examined the inmates. Genl Warren [22.] is again in command of the 2nd Corps, Gen. Hancock being ordered to Washington. Wrote to Prof. N in the afternoon, also wrote to Hudson Taylor [23.] Bookseller Washington DC.for Rebellion Record. No news from home. One of the men of my company was on a visit to us to-day – he says the rebels are compelled to have 3 lines of pickets to prevent desertion and that they are very insolent. Note: 20. Cromwell’s Soldier’s Pocket Bible was a pamphlet carried by the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth army in the first English Civil War. 21. A Quotation by Samuel Taylor Coleridge(1772-1834) , entitled “Inscription on a Timepiece” (1830). 22. Maj. Gen. Gouvenour Kemble Warren (1830-1882) temporarily replaced Hancock on and off between August, 1863 to March 1864 .Hancock returned for a while but was ordered to Washington more so to comfort his wound received at Gettysburg which refused to heal. 23.
