Martinez Apr 21/08 Dear Mr Colby, The Phelan forces seem according to Call dispatches to be actually making some headway.
I have written to the President, but it might be well to telegraph to Garfield on the part of the Club requesting time to
show after competent disinterested examination that the claim made by the proponents of the Phelan scheme that Hetch Hetchy
is the only pure adequate source of supply for the city that is now available is utterly preposterous without any foundation
in fact. And therefore that no promise of any sort, of H. H.y - for a reservoir site now or in the future shoul d? be made
to the City. Lake Eleanor Cherry Creek sites on the northern tributaries of the Tuolumne basin are purer than the H H drainage
amply sufficient for a hundred yrs etc. Faithfully yours John Muir
