letterhead Sep. 25. 1896 Dear Louie From Los Angeles we came here the day before yesterday arriving at 7.30, P.M. engaged
a stout spring wagon with four horses started next morning up the San Bernardino Mountains to Squirel Inn on the summit of
the range a distance of 24 miles Here we found a firm forest of sugar pines silver fir Labocedrous etc fine for this hot region
Col. Wood took good care of us showed us telling views of the reservation etc. Yesterday we drove along the dividing ridge
between the Orange valleys the Mojave desert from which we had glorious views that I wish you could have seen. then descended
by another wild mountain grade got back here last evening after dark. Today about noon we start 02155 2 letterhead
for San Jacinto Mountains where we expect to spend two or three days, then we go direct to Flagstaff Arizona thence to San
Francisco Mountains the Grand Canon. Be sure to write me at Flagstaff as soon as you receive this as we will be thereabouts
for a week probably Thence I start home stopping a day or so at Los Angeles Pasadena. We met Lummis at Los Angelet had a
good talk with him on Forest matters also with others introduced by him. Lukens is expected home on the 1st of October Love
