OFFICE CENTRAL PACIFIC RAILROAD Co. LAND DEPARTMENT. ROOM NO. 26, - 4TH FLOOR. HOBART BUILDING. SAN FRANCISCO, March
22nd.'97 John Muir Esq. Martinez , Cal. My dear Mr Muir:- I answer in this your esteemed favor of March 21st. We cannot
in the little book we are going to print expect to tell much on any subject. We cannot elaborate. If a dozen sentences on
the subject of the geological formation of this State could be formulated by some one acquainted with it, it would answer
the purpose. We are not going to try to instruct the people who cone to us from the East in the geology of California in a
techinical way. What we want to say to them is in answer to any question they might ask which could be answered by very general
statements. I trust therefore very sincerely that you will reconsider your determination not to treat the subject of geology
and will give you more space. I accept with much pleasure your kind offer to write something on the scenic features of California
The contributors to this little book are all ,or nearly all, eminent men, and we want to, present it to our Eastern visitors
as merely a sketch of the subjects treated from the standpoint of the best intelligence. I therefore urge upon you a reconsideration
of your determination. Please let me hear from you and oblige. Yours very truly illegible 02265
