Indian baskets--California
Peaceable, gentle and amenable to progressive influences were the pastoral Southern California Indians by nature. Before the coming of the Franciscan Missionaries they were advanced a small measure from the stone age. Manufacturing wooden vessels, gold and silver idols, and ingenious weapons for hunting, they were easily taught by the holy Padres, among many other arts and industries, to weave leaves and fibers and grasses into baskets and hats and mats. With the going of the Missions the short lived civilization of the Indian neophytes disappeared, but they did not forget their basket making, which is today their chief occupation.
