Martinez, Jan. 16, 1896 My dear Mr Johnson I was just about to write you last night when your letter came with the very
information I wanted, I was afraid you were sick in the sleety New York was fretting about Bowers being on the Land Com. Those
firey Volcanic Carbuncles are deadly things we rejoice that you have come safely through the battle. I felt sure you would
find Runcie level useful on Yosemite park affairs I am glad we are to have a National forestry Commission brought forth under
such favorable formidable auspices When you require any expression on forest matters from the Sierra Club let me know, or
anything else I can do. As to Yosemite recession nobody opposes it nobody cares for it enough to act excepting politicians
those interested in roads franchises---they all offer or would offer active opposition. I cant find a single man in dead earnest
for recession. My hope is on your side the country in the new generation growing here with whom going to the forests every
summer is becoming common all mountaineers you know are our friends. Your Plain words to Californians cannot I think fail
to do good in any case Yosemite Commissioner Fields is honestly trying to meet our views as to management but his term of
office expires soon. We hope the Governor will reappoint him With best wishes for the new year Mrs Muir joins me Ever admiringly
yours John Muir 10018
