January 20, 1902. R. W. GILDER, EDITOR. R. U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C. C. BUEL, ASSISTANT EDITOR. John Muir,
Esq., Martinez, California. My dear Muir: Your interesting and friendly letter of the 24th of December came duly to hand.
We are very much pleased to know that you are at work on the Yosemite book and the publishers join us in hoping that you will
keep right at it until it is completed. We also want a harpoon in the other material. Now, as to the Colorado canon, we are
wondering whether you could not run down there, letting us pay your expenses to the tune of 50. or so in addition to the honorarium.
We presume that you have passes which would reduce the railway expenses to a minimum. Please write to us frankly on this point.
