1 August 23d, 1905 John Muir Martinez Cal. Dear old friend I am deeply pained at news which reached me only this day.
Mrs Knox writes me that in a Pasadena paper she saw the notice of the death of your wife. Now Mrs Knox is in Buffalo N.Y.
and I have been expected there for more than a week and my mail from Morrison has been forwarded there 03617 2 I think
and if you have written me your letter has probably gone there. I think it strange none of my California friends have not
written me if that item be true - I hope it is not - but I fear if pneumonia once had hold of your wife it would go hard with
her. Much love and sympathy for you all if you are in afflictions and will you not let me hear particulars. I left Morrison
in July and am with my cousin Jessie Harshberger, we have been stopping on the shore of the lake north of Chicago 03617
