Description:
In 1878 Tanner Hose Company was formed by the employees of the Santa Clara
Tannery. Jacob Eberhard, owner of the Tannery purchased a hose cart and 500 feet of hose
for it. Although originally meant to provide protection for the Tannery by 1888, when a
building to house the company was contructed, Tanner Hose had become one of the five
volunteer companies that provided fire protection to the whole town. From Santa Clara
