l89IllegibleDear Sir: -We wish to insert a sketch of your life in the National Cyclopedia of American Biography, a work now
in preparation, which will be to this country what the great National Biographies are to Europe. Will you therefore kindly
have a biography prepared, or furnish me the data, together with brief mention of your ancestry, to enable me to write a proper
article. The Publishers make no charge whatever for the preparation and insertion of this sketch; neither is it obligatory
to take a copy of the work, though of course they will appreciate the sympathy and support of such a subscription. The press
has endorsed this work as the biographical authority of the century, surpassing everything of the kind ever published. It
will be sold by subscription, but is not yet placed upon the market, though nearly 5,000 advance orders have been given, which
include nearly every large library here and abroad. Five volumes are already completed, and the remaining seven are in rapid
course of preparation, and will probably be issued one every six months.I would like to have this biography appear in the
forthcoming volume, and if you cannot prepare it yourself, will you indicate some one competent to do so. A proof will be
submitted to you for correction before going to press. Respectfully yours, IllegibleManaging Editor. 01985
