Martinez Oct. 13, 1905 My dear Cousin, We all thank you for your kind sympathy in our bereavement, which came so suddenly
on us. Up to her last day my noble wife was not aware of the hopelessness of recovery, nor indeed were any of us though warned
by the doctors a month before. She suffered but little pain; was cheerful, at last simply fell asleep. I am still very anxious
about Helen. Twice after gaining almost perfect health she brought on inflamation of the left lung by careless over-exertion,
riding 30 or 40 miles on horseback a day getting drenched in thunderstorms etc. She had her last relapse about four weeks
ago - was in bed 10 days, 03646
