Portland, Aug. 15, 1885 , 12 M. Dear Louie, I mean to leave for home today at 3 o'clock P.M. I am feeling pretty well,
stomach all right today. I have just seen John Muir and had a long chat with him in his private office. He is a remarkably
interesting man -- all of that name are. He wanted me to go out to his house and stay a day or two, but of course that would
be too much of J. M. at present. He provided me with a half fare ticket to St. Paul, and return, via Kansas City, which will
be a saving of a hundred dollars or so. I also found Mr. Shulze and heard of Mr. Vanderbilt. He is still in Alaska, and well,
but not rich. I hope you are caring more for your health than for the ranch affairs. I will not stay away longer than you
think I can be spared, provided you do not allow things to affect your health. I miss my Wanda, but know she is happy with
her grandpa. Tell her I kiss my hand to her every day, though far away. Goodbye, love to all, Ever truly yours, JOHN
MUIR I fear no letter has yet reached Portland, but will call at the office just before leaving. Will get your letter when
I return here on the way home by way of the Oregon Shortline.
