Notes:
In the eighteenth century Rome and Venice were essential stops on the Grand Tour of Europe, leading to increased demand for
printed views of those cities. In response to this demand, Canaletto published a set of thirty-one views of Venice and its
surroundings, dedicated and probably financed by Joseph Smith, British consul in Venice. Canaletto's views comprise both actual
vistas and imaginary evocations. Mestre is a harbor just outside Venice.
