Martinez, Cal. May 19, 1905. Dear Mr. Murdock Murdoch : Many thanks for kindly sending me newspapers, Bennycook's Boy
and photographs of my old home in Dunbar. I have just received a letter from Cousin James Hay announcing the death of his
sister Sophia, Mrs. Jeffery, whom I very well remember when I made my visit to Birkenhead. I liked her very much and am sorry
to hear the sad news. We are all about as usual except my daughter Helen, who had an attack of pneumonia two years ago and
has not yet fully recovered. Therefore I mean to take her to Arizona for the summer, hoping the dry air will complete her
cure. We all remember your visit to us with great pleasure. Kindly remember me to Mrs. Murdock, and believe me Ever faithfully
your friend, John Muir. In all the hand-written letters the spelling Murdoch seems to be clear, although the above typewritten
letter stands uncorrected as Murdock 03555
