Description:
MURRAY SCHOOL, c. 1901. Murray Township's first school, and one of the oldest in Alameda County, Murray School came into
being so the children of Dublin's earliest pioneer families could receive a formal education. Erected in 1856 on what is
now Flanangan Road, James Witt Dougherty donated the land. He named the schoolhouse after his friend, Michael Murray, who
was a supervisor in the township. Housing an average of 40-50 pupils from grades 1 through 8, the structure had to be moved
in 1860 due to frequent flooding. Jeremiah Fallon used oxen to drag the schoolhouse to higher ground. Here is the class
0f 1901, with a hint regarding their means of transportation on either side.
