Autobiography & Reminiscence of L.H. Bonestell, San Francisco, 1904. The Society of California Pioneers
Louis H. Bonestell was born in the town of Catskill, Green County, New York. He moved to New York City at nineteen years
of age, in 1847. In the fall of 1848, news of the discovery of gold reached Mr. Bonestell and he quickly resolved to make
the journey to California. On January 31, 1849 Mr. Bonestell left New York on board the bark "Mara" destined for Vera Cruz.
From Vera Cruz, Bonestell and his party traveled overland to Mazatlan, where they boarded a schooner for San Francisco. The
schooner failed in its mission and Bonestell and his party commenced walking to California from Mazatlan. They arrived in
San Diego on June 22, 1849. Bonestell worked for the government in San Diego for two months before taking passage on a ship
up to San Francisco. He arrived in San Francisco on August 18, 1849, and soon left for Sacramento and then Coloma. He mined
until October and then bought the newspaper route of the Alta California. He sold out of this business in 1851 and started
in the book and stationery business with a partner. In 1853, he and his partner established "Wide West", a short-lived literary
journal. He eventually entered into the wholesale business of paper importing. Mr. Bonestell was a pillar of the Unitarian
Church of San Francisco
