Located on the Mark’s Building this sign reads, “In 1886, the year the Statue of Liberty was erected in New York Harbor,
Joseph marks had this building constructed of brick made from native clays, dug and fired at a site one mile west of Julian.
In 1869 traces of gold were discovered in Coleman Creek. Gold in paying quantities was reputed to have been found by Billie
Gorman on the present site of the George Washington Mine Feb. 22, 1870. the townsite of Julian was laid out by Drury Bailey,
out of his homestead, and named after is cousin Mike Julian. Credit as the founding fathers must be given to James and Drury
Bailey and their cousins Michael and Webb Julian, all ex-confederate soldiers from Georgia.
