Description:
Nels Hultberg is pictured holding the handles of a wheelbarrow to give Claude Shafer a ride down Main Street. It is reported
to be the payoff for losing a political bet. A crowd of men and boys on bicycles and horses and in cars and wagons gathered
to watch the event. The name Vignolo Block can be seen on the building to the left. It contained both the Hotel Carolyn and
the Turlock Land Company. Nels Hultberg was one of the owners of the latter and he was instrumental in drawing a large number
of settlers to Turlock, beginning in 1903.
