Garnett Kansas February 17,1914 Mr John Muir Martinez, Calif. Dear Sir;- I want to thank you for your cordial letter
- received to-day - commending my Bird Study Note Book . As to its size, it is too large for field use, but you will notice
in my preface I suggest a small note book from which this more complete record can be made. My note book is designed primarily
for children in the grades and has grown out of my work with them - indeed this is my outline just as I have used it for several
years, My aim is to record all necessary information but not enough to be burdensome. First in importance is to have the children
recognize the birds, then learn to love them thro feeding and protecting them. Right now - in my school room - are forty
of the most enthusiastic little bird students you ever saw and reposing on a shelf are ten more boxes to be put up as soon
as our present snow is gone. At one of our windows is a feeding board and nailed-on a tree where we can watch it from our
windows is a generous piece of suet. Friday we timed a Downy Woodpecker. He ate diligently for seven minutes. We can scarcely
look out that we do not see Hairy and Downy woodpeckers, Chickadees and Nuthatches at the suet. Of-course the children are
delighted and I feel sure they are learning lessons of sympathy and care for these little creatures that they will never forget.
Sincerely and gratefully illegible 05710
