ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY. Jamaica Plain, Mass., April 19, 1897. My dear Muir: I find the enclosed in the
Spokane paper. I do not think thereis anything new in the situation except that the amendment to the Sundry Civil Bill introduced
into the Senate and approved by the committee wipes out all of Cleveland's recommendations. I do not believe this will become
law however. The situation is still grave and I have therefore hurried up our report which is now finished and will be transmitted
the 1st of May. I hope all the members of the Commission will sign it but I am doubtful about Hague and Pinchot. Perhaps in
your varied career you have discovered that the most trying sort of a person to deal with is a fool and in the last year I
have had my share of them to manage. Let me hear how you are getting on. Faithfully yours, C. S. Sargent John Muir,
Esq. Martinez, Cal. 02277
