Title:

Juan Pacifico Ontiveros and his wife, Maria Martina [graphic]
Digital Anaheim

Description:

Double portrait of Juan Pacifico Ontiveros, the man from whom the Los Angeles Vineyard Society's pioneers of Anaheim purchased the 1,165 acres of the 35,970 acre Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana in 1857, on which Anaheim now stands, and his wife, Maria Martina (née Osuña); this image is a photograph of a painting copied after a daguerrotype by the artist and photographer Henri Joseph Penelon [it is unclear whether Penelon is responsible for creating the painting and/or the daguerrotype]; image shows frontal half-length double portrait, with Maria on the left and Juan on the right, standing slightly behind his wife; notes written on reverse of photograph read "presented by Zoraida B. Travis [possibly Zoraida Ontiveros Hughes, daughter of Salvador Ontiveros and Maria Zoraida Olivera]. Dec. 9, 1929 / This picture is a copy of a copy taken from a daguerreo type made by Penelon in Los Angeles about the year 1865. The occasion arose on departing from my Father [Salvador Ontiveros?, 1845-1891], who had accompanied his Father [Juan Pacifico Ontiveros] and mother in law [Mrs. Juan Pedro Olivera?, mother of Salvador's wife, Maria Zoraida Olivera] as far as Los Angeles, at the time of their leavetaking from a visit to their daughter [Maria Zoraida?] and himself at their home in Yorba. It was due to my father's efforts and my grandfather's affection for him that he consented having the one picture ever taken of himself. At this time Juan Pacifico Ontiveros was 72 years of age and his wife Martina Maria Ozuma [sic] 56 years."
