ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY, Jamaica Plain, Mass., April 16, 1898. My dear Muir: Do you know what is going
on in Washington? The Senate has already passed an amendment to the Sundry Civil Bill abolishing altogether the Cleveland
Forest Reservations. The matter is now in the House for action hut has not yet been reported on by the committee to which
it has been referred. Any such action ought, of course, to be stopped if possible. Do what you can with your California people.
The trouble just now seems to be that the country is so distracted with this foolish war business and the newspapers are so
full with talk about it that no one will pay any attention to the forests, and the matter will get crowded through without
any one's getting a chance to protest. I have a line from General Abbot written at sea between Panama and New York where
I suppose he is now landed. He says he is to be there only a week and then return to Paris. He is well apparently and has
had a delightful time so far in his work. In haste, faithfully yours, . C.S. illegible John Muir, Esq. Martinez, Cal.
