June 30th, 1894. R.W. GILDER, EDITOR. R.U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C.C. BUEL, ASSISTANT EDITOR. My dear Muir:-
According to the table of contents of your volume you are going to print a book on the mountains of California with no description
of the three chief attractions of that region,- namely, the three great gorges, the Hetch-Hetchy, Yosemite and the King's
River Ca on. The publishers speak of the book as being a little longer than they had expected it would be, and it is of course
possible for you to make another book on the gorges of the Sierra. Moreover, I have not carefully examined the last two-fifths
of the book, and therefore cannot say that you have not worked in the Century articles on these topics under other heads;
but certainly your readers will expect to find something about the Yosemite, and we have a number of illustrations which could
be used. As I am going out of town, I write this letter to be shown to Mr. Scott and to be forwarded to you with such comment
as he may wish to make for The Century Co. He will probably say that it is impracticable to add anything to the volume at
the present time, in which case please note the title for another book as above. I shall read the galley proofs of the rest
