OF THE GENERAL LAND OFFICE. Mr. John Muir, Martinez, California My dear Mr. Muir: Senator Flint, of California, has
sent me a copy of your letter of September 12, 1906, addressed to Mr. John J. Byrne, Los Angeles, California, in which you
briefly report your examination of certain petrified forest remain in Arizona, lying to the north of the petrified Forest
National Monument,Proclaimed by the President December 8, 1906. and containing illegible acres, of which a copy is herewith
inclosed as well as a copy of the Act of June 8, 1906, under which this and other monuments have already been created. Senator
Flint has also sent me your pencil sketch, showing approximate area, direction and distance from Adamana station, S. Fe. Railway,
of the various petrified forest remains visited by you, and I think it certain that those named as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Blue
Forests are covered by the proclamation. It is of the others, therefore, and particularly those north of the Rail-road, that
I wish to get, if possible, more definite information. In preparing the drafts of proclamations and the maps which are made
a part of them, it is extremely desirable that the requirements of the second paragraph of the Act which restricts areas of
monuments, be kept in mind, and this I have done heretofore and desire to continue. I have no doubt that your 03794
