First draft of letter,in note-book January,1903 Prof. Harry Fielding Reid, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.
Dear Mr.Reid: I am sorry I have nothing of importance to offer for your annual report on Glaciers. I met a traveler this
summer who had just returned from the Muir Glacier, but could get nothing definite out of him as to recession, this being
his first visit. I don't believe the earthquake had any appreciable influence on this glacier. This summer I saw a dozen or
more of the Sierra glaciers about the heads of Kern and Kings rivers. They had all receded slightly in the last few years.
I shall be glad to see your work on glacier structure. My mind was made up in the subject years ago, as to main features.
With best wishes and kind regards to Mrs. Reid, and hoping to see you ere long, I am, Faithfully yours, John Muir
