R. W. GILDER, EDITOR R. U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C. C. BUEL, ASSISTANT EDITOR. September 4th, 1902. Mr. John
Muir, Martinez, Calif. My dear Mr. Muir:- In further reply to your letter of the 28th of August, let me say that Mr.
Gilder heartily approves of my having sent you an extra check and says that he would be glad to see that article on the Canyon
of the Kern River, but he hopes that you can bring it within a smaller compass than the Colorado Canyon paper, much as we
like It. You see in these days of magazine competition, we must have variety of appeal and we cannot get this if the articles
are long; so give us one of four thousand words instead of eight. As to Keith's pictures, this is a matter entirely in the
hands of our Art Department. I have forgotten the quality pt his work and I think the Art Department knows nothing about it.
so at A this long range we should have to ask him to submit these Illustrations for our approval. The photographs you can
no doubt send us with your text. 03038
