Autobiography & Reminiscence of Solomon Wood, San Francisco, 1904. The Society of California Pioneers
Solomon Wood was born on December 19th, 1813 in the town of Stoneraise, England. He sailed for America in 1837 and settled
in Philadelphia, practicing his trade of stone-cutting. Later that year he traveled to St. Louis and remained there until
1849 when he started across the plains for California in search of gold. He arrived in "Hangtown" on August 14th, 1849.
He and his company began their mining operations at Georgestown, and the Spanish Bar, on the middle fork of the American River.
They gradually worked their way up the Yuba River to Downieville. Mr. Wood continued to mine for gold and later around 1852
pursued quartz mining, securing an interest in the Plumas Eureka and Ariel Mines
