THE WORLD'S WORK FARMING DOUBLEDAY PAGE CO. 133-135-137 EAST 16TH STREET, NEW YORK COUNTRY LIFE IN AMERICA THE
GARDEN MAGAZINE August 3, 1908 Dear Mr. Muir: I an afraid that you will think whenever your mail overtakes you where
ever you are that I am bombarding you rather vigorously with letters. May be I am, but they are not hostile projectiles, Be
assured of that. It is the friendliest bombardment that ewer a man got. I wrote to Mr. French Strother at Fresno, telling
him that I had written you expressing the hope that you might send for him to come and see you. He is a very skillful young
man in the practical side of the literary craft, for we trained him in our office. If I ewer write a book he is the young
man I should have next to me to see that the papers are arranged right and to keep me up to the job and to any kind of task
that could be delegated to another. I hope you will feel, therefore, that there is possibly some practical help in the suggestion
and let him come and see you. I hope you will pardon me for writing so many letters to you, but I beg that you will agree
with me in this idea. if nothing more. You have written on the great aspects of nature in that wonderful land ' hat you have
made your own. The mountains and the trees and the glaciers are yours. Your interpretation of them you owe in the first place
to them. In the next place you owe it to the whole reading world. It is a great service that you will do. You have been putting
it off so long, always for good reasons I know, that you ought to make the start now. if possible and I think you will be
surprised how easy it will be. I fear I run some risk of wearying you. but; if I can in any way Influence you to get this
great book ready, I am willing to incur the blame, even if I annoy you somewhat, provided the annoyance do not shape itself
into a possible convinction that I am a bore. What I am trying to do is to induce you to do a great task for generations to
come. Believe me. John Muir, Esq,. Most heartily yours, ILLEGIBLE Martinez, California.03845
