Description:
Orange County Hospital, West Chapman Avenue, Orange, California, ca. 1930. Image shows facade of hospital, with "ORANGE
COUNTY FARM" beneath the pediment, view looking west, with several cars parked in front along large lawn in foreground. Designed
by architect Frederick H. Eley and constructed in 1914 as the Orange County Poor Farm where residents raised their own vegetables,
hogs and chickens and picked fruit from a 23-acre Valencia orange grove. Poor farm was phased out in the Depression as too
expensive. Hospital was expanded in 1963, and the name was changed to Orange County Medical Center in 1969. Buildings were
sold in 1976 to the University of California, and later became the UCI Medical Center.
