letterhead April 19, 1899. My dear Mr. Muir: Glad to hear that you are likely to be with us in the Alaska trip. I can
now give you some additional details. The espedition belongs to Mr. E.H. Harriman of New York. Mr. Harriman is a wealthy
and escessinly? busy business man. He engaged? the ship and asked my illegible eration in making up the scientific party.
We went over a list and selected certain names, yours among them and at Mr. Harriman's request I am acting as his representative
in making up the part of attending to these matters, as he is too busy and away too much of the time. He has lately been to
Hot Springs, Chicago, and several st illegible places and I have no idea where he is today. The espedition will probably
have illegible about May 30, and I hope you will get out of the Yosemite trip - or postpone it so I can go with you when we
get back - and go with us. I am sure you will be interested in the Lt. Elias and Cook Inlet country. We are taking half a
dozen camp outfits lecturers for shore escursions. I think John Burroughs - a great admirer of yours will go with us. We
all want you to go and I most earnestly trust nothing will happen to prevent. I shall be glad to answer any questions you
may want to ask. illegible illegible C. Hart Merriam Mr John Muir, Martinez Calif. 02566
