Description:
Title from item. On back of item: "Camera Corner, 431-13th St. Oakland,
Calif., Higate 4-6663". The photograph depicts the exteriors of buildings at the
southwest corner of 12th and Franklin streets, a parcel now occupied by University of
California Office of the President. The second floor operated for many years as a dance hall,
commonly offering the services of taxi dancers. At the time of the photograph, signs show the
facility operating as "Danceland" and as "Sweet's," whose
entrance is along 12th Street. Louis' Smoke Shop, owned by Louis Stein, occupies the ground
floor storefront. Other businesses shown include Hong Kong Chop Suey, Jack's Hot Dogs, Walt's
405 Club and the Russo Shoe Co. Danceland later operated as the Rose Room, a taxi-dance hall.
