as to opening attenuata cones, and the long lide of this tree Martinez, Dec. 10, 1899 My dear Mr Lukens, I never shelled
out the tuberculata (or attenuata as it is now called) pine seeds I only know that the cones never open until the tree dies
it seldom dies until it is attacked by fire I suppose a quick scorching of the cones would cause them to open without destroying
the vitality of the seeds, but great care would be required. Perhaps a summers toasting in the sun would also be effective.
The handsome tree with flat fern like branches is Abies concolor, the other as far as I can make out are the Yellow pine Douglass
spruce, Libocedrus a few Junipers Sugar pines. Love to Lottie Ever Cordially Yours John Muir
