December 1st, 1897. R. W. GILDER, EDITOR, R. U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C. C. BUEL, ASSISTANT EDITOR. Mr. John
Muir, Martinez, Cal. My dear Muir, Is there any chance whatever of your going to the Klondike for any purpose? illegible
Have you ever been in that region, and if so is there anything of interest that you could write at once -- say, a page or
two? May I suggest that in disposing of your Atlantic articles you reserve the book rights. If you say nothing about it they
will consider that they have bought the book rights and you will not be free to make arrangements afterward, and if those
articles and the ones we have already published naturally: make a volume, I think our publishers would be glad to undertake
its publication. Yours faithfully, R. U. Johnson.
