63 Martinez, Aug. 3, 1898 My dear Johnson. I have just read your Editorials on the war, civil service, etc. They are
capital. We miss the few soldiers that have been so admirably poling? the National Parks. Sheep fire destruction are going
merrily on. Some 85000 sheep it is said were in the Yosemite Park alone were drawn out by special agents guards. Of course
they cannot keep them out. How Pinchot can be opposed to soldiers in favor of civilians to some extent of sheep in the view
of results passes my understanding. I expect to start east about the end of this month to see the trees of the Alleghenies
