EDITORIAL ROOMS HOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY 4 PARK STREET BOSTON September 30, 1908. Dear Mr. Muir: We beg to enclose
herewith duplicate contracts for the publication of Stickeen . Please sign them both, and return one to us. We should have
wished in this case, as in the case of Our National Parks , to have offered you a royalty upon a sliding scale, but in view
of the small size of this book and the necessarily low price at which it must be sold, a royalty of straight ten per cent
has seemed to us an equitable arrangement, for while, owing to the small size of the book, the returns will necessarily be
limited, the expenses involved in advertising and publicity are naturally as great as in the case of a book to sell at a higher
price. Please believe that Stickeen is a story which we shall take particular pleasure and satisfaction in issuing, and that
we shall make every effort to give it an appropriate embodiment and the widest possible circulation. Please believe us Faithfully
yours, Houghton Mifflin Co Ferris Greenslet John Muir, Esq.
