Autobiography & Reminiscence of Capt. Joseph S. Garcia, San Francisco, 1904. The Society of California Pioneers
Joseph S. Garcia was born in Fayal, one of the Azores Islands, on June 9, 1823. When he was thirteen years of age he became
cabin boy to Capt. James Wooly of Lynn, Massachusetts on a voyage from Fayal to Boston. He received schooling in Lynn, MA
and traveled to India, Manila, South Africa, Zanzibar, and Hong Kong. In 1847 he became a naturalized citizen of the United
States and arrived in San Francisco in 1849 on the Brig "Mary Adeline." His first occupation was running a river boat between
San Francisco and Sacramento. He then mined in 1850 and returned to San Francisco and bought a share in a merchant ship.
Two years later he went into partnership with two captains and bought several vessels. In 1868, Capt. Garcia left the seafaring
life and settled in the Cucamonga vineyard. In 1875 he sold this property and moved to Etiwanda, a town he established.
He stayed there for seven years and then built the first house in Ontario, California
