Martinez, Oct 1, 1899. My dear Sister Mary We were glad to hear from you over more to learn that you your family are well.
Louis has been quite poorly for a long time but it now better all the rest of us are about as usual Maggie is better this
year than she has been for many years is reviving? her youth almost in the smiles of her new grandchild. Mays dignified happiness
is grand. David is very busy shipping grapes making money prospering generally. Im pegging away at a new book about forests
etc. Had a glorious trip up north among the forests gardens glaciers of Alaska When I can find time to write about them I
dont know Thomas Hill is still painting in Wanona last I heard. Ever lovingly your brother John Muir
