July 29, 1902. R.W.GILDER, EDITOR. R. U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C. C. BUEL. ASSISTANT EDITOR. My dear Muir:
I have read your article on the Grand Canon and am very much pleased with it. The end crowns the work, and we accede to your
desire to have 250. for it. I believe we have already sent you 60., and I inclose the balance herewith. Is this right? Mr.
Scott desires me to say to you that we expect to treat you generously in the matter of your new volume, that you must remember
when you say your book on parks has sold better than The Mountains of California, that the earlier book was a great advertisement
of the later one, and that a second book nearly always sells better than the first; also that there is a great deal more interest
in national parks now than there was five years ago. In other words, to put it commercially, The Century Co. did a great deal
of advertising, both of the subject and the author, in the five years that elapsed between the two books. The Century Co.,
having suggested to you the book on the Yosemite, expects to bring it out, and to do it on terms satisfactory to you. We
also note your desire to use the Grand Canon 03023
