Today was cold but very pleasant in company with my friend [Pitcher] I visited Mount Pleasant hospital found Cousin Johnny well and received for my reward two good letters from my truest best friend, very very welcome are they proving I am not forgotten and still dear to her. Late last night after all had retired I wrote a letter to an old freind Robert [Dransfield] Rochester N.Y. on returning to the Hospital found that servies were to be held in Ward 4. attended and heard a good discourse by Rev. W H Channing in the evening wrote two long letters and to Miss H. M. [Sweet] [&] an another to my Betrothed. Date of letters recieved today Dec. 23 & Jan 1st. the last a truely cheering letter. Bringing me news from my home and from my mother war news today encouraging but very meagre. The enemy holding to the hope of foreign recognition, have felt very well all day.
