Transcription: [written above date] Stanton General Hospital Washington D.C. Wet and rainy until 10 A.M. when it cleared off and the sun shone with unwonted splendor. The inaugeration ceremonies come off in spite of the Rain. A vast crowd assembled. The Inaugeral speech short but very pointed. All who were able [to go] out were provided with [illegible] by the Surgeon in charge. Grand reception at the President's house in the evening. At noon the [planet] Venus and the moon could be plainly sen when the sun was shining brightly. May take this as a good omen for the Nation and others as a bad one. I take it as a grand spectacle in Nature. Feel unwell. No letters received or written today. -------------------------------- Saturday, March 4.
