Crandall, Tenn. June 8th, 1902. Dear Mr. Muir: I was greatly pleased the other day to receive your charming book The
Mountains of California . I am only slightly acquainted with that beautiful state and shall enjoy reading of its varied and
wonderful scenes and the fascinating animal life within its borders, all the more, too, through the element of personality
that the book now possesses for me as a gift from yourself. Two summers ago I camped in the San Bernardino Mts and for a short
while enjoyed the company of Mr. Lukens of Pasadena, who, like myself, was engaged at that time in making some special investigations
for the Bureau of Forestry. Since then I have wished 03013 2 very often to be back and see other parts of the state.
I trust the day may come when my wish shall be realized. I want to thank you for your kind encouragement to try another and
a larger book than the little one I sent you and again for your thoughtfulness in having sent me a copy of your first volume.
Please accept my sincerest wishes for your continued welfare and believe me Faithfully yours, G. Fred Schwarz. Bureau
of Forestry, U.S. Dep't of Agriculture. 03013
