Martinez, Aug 5th 1897. Bancroft Library My dear Mr. Kip, I did not meet you on the 3d because I was lame with a slight
abrasion on ankle. My sister was not feeling well enough for the trip had to give it up. Much to her sorrow I start for Banff
on the Rockies tomorrow to study some spruces thereabouts perhaps may go with Prof. Sargent to Alaska for another look at
some of the trees there. How glad I would have been to be free to go with you to my old Yosemite home. It is now sadly spoiled
however. I am greatly disappointed in not being able to meet you from so petty a cause. With best wishes many pleasant memories
I am very truly yours John Muir
