Dipsea Race
Run up Mount Tamalpais
Description:
A large group of runners gather outside the Hikers Retreat before the Dipsea Race or the Run up Mount Tamalpais. The Hikers
Retreat was located on the northwest corner of Throckmorton and Madrona. The Bennetts Building, at 154-160 Throckmorton Avenue
was built in 1906 and was home of the Bank of Mill Valley, Milley's first bank, until 1911. The building is a 1.5 story English
stucco and wood structure with gables in front and on the end. The Hikers Retreat was opened by Michael Shapiro and Frank
Kitsom in 1911. It offered hot and cold showers and complete checking facilites (lockers). In 1918, the Hikers Retreat moved
across Throckmorten to the present Sweetwater site. The headquarters for the newly formed Tamalpais Fire District is visible
at the far left. This building was renovated in the 1920s by the McNamara family but retains elements of the original appearance.
Yesteryear's Antiques occupied this site at 154 Throckmorton Avenue in 1977. Hikers often came by ferry and train from San
Francisco.
