Special 49 Martinez, June 3. 1896 My dear Johnson. I telegraphed you Monday that I would be with you about June 20
to receive the Harvard baptism you have prepared for me. Heavens, what an honor for a tramp how it surprises escites me. You
must have done an appalling lot of work to bring this about Now more than ever I must sing my love for Harvard. From the
very beginning of my studies it was Harvard men who first hailed cheered me? Emerson Agasaiz Gray. now Sargent Eliot R. U.
J. Century even in California the Harvard alumni were the first to honor me. Yes strange to say I would escape this formal
honor if I could without hurting my friends my influence for good. But it seems I can't so Ill be with you gladly do what
I can to manifest appreciation of this honor ( have had the Grippe several coughs colds that require icy exurcions rather
than exciting ceremonies, therefore I'm run down nervous. However I'll face the fine music look to you to see me through.
