Winnetka, III., May 30, 1895. Mr. John Muir, Author of Mountains of California , C/o Century Co., New York. Dear Sir:-
Having been put under deep obligations to you for the pleasure got from reading your exquisite book on the Mountains of California
, I take the liberty of seeking to get further in your debt. You were with Mr. Emerson in his trip to California in 1871.
The Illegible Daily Chronicle, in its review of your book, alluded to the interchange of compliments between you and him,
in which it said you returned his comparison of you with Thoreau by calling him the sequoia of mankind. would it not be possible
for you to write an account of your intercourse with Mr. Emerson during these weeks? By doing so you would do a great favor
not only to the lovers of that great man, but also to the world of literature. Very respectfully yours, Illegible01987
