First draft of letter, in note-book 59 (49) Jan.'02 . Mr. Ray Stannard Baker, McC lure's Magazine, 141 East Twenty-fifth
St., New York. Dear Mr. B aker : I think pictures of my friends Emerson, Gray, Hooker, etc. would have a brag look and
be out of place in an article about me. Better leave them out, even if you have obtained permission to publish them. As to
a nature book made up of old letters, I have often thought of collecting these letters and putting them in shape for publica-tion
in book from. I have drawn from some of them in my articles, and others have made free with them. Still enough may be left
for a small book of first impressions which might be worth reading, and I'll think about it after getting a lot of other work
