Martinez, California September 23/07 Dear Mr. Johnson: Here is a copy of the report of the Sierra Club committee, sent
to Secretary Garfield a few days ago. I think it would be a good thing to get the Appalachian Club to endorse it. Mr. Pinchot
came into the Director's meeting near its close. Heheard the principal objections discussed but I was disapointed in not getting
a quiet talk with him to explain fully. He has never seen Hetch Hetchy. Mr. Pinchot's big mistake is taking Mr. Phelan's voice
and the few under his direction as the voice of San Francisco. On the contrary never was a scheme more truly a one man scheme
than this. Not one in a thousand of the citizens of San Francisco of the Coast in general know oractively care anything about
Mr. Phelan's water scheme for San Francisco. Let me hear how you're getting along. Faithfully yours, signed John Muir
