written after hard sickness. still very gratful Martinez, March. 11, 1908 Dear Mr Lukens: I have been very sick but
am up slowly convalescing, hoping soon to get into the Sierra for a breath of reviving air I had a severe attack of the Grippe,
(the 3d this winter) it came near making an end of me. The last four years have been full of anxiety sorrow sickness making
me barren useless But I must not complain for most of my life has been joyous free above most. Thanking you for your kind
sympathy I am ever faithfully your friend John Muir
