March 15th, 1898. R. W. GILDER, EDITOR. X. U. JOHNSON, ASSOCIATE EDITOR. C. C. BUEL ASSISTANT EDITOR. Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Cal. My dear Muir, Your recent letter to me saying that you will go to the Klondike if I will was most alluring,
and I only wish it were possible for me to go there or anywhere else in your company, but this year I am tied to my desk,
as I had rather a long vacation last fall. I am very sorry to say that your letter which I showed to Mr. Gilder has been
mislaid. I regret this all the more because of your indictment of me of terrible immorality in thinking badly of our friend,
the editor of the---Monthly. I am specially sorry to mislay this letter because it is a voucher that in every other respect
I am perfection, and it isn't often that we get such vouchers in this world, even from our own wives. As to the forestry
matter mentioned in your letter just come to hand, I should like to be of use and will look up the facts, the date at which
the suspension of Cleveland's order will end. Perhaps we can get something in before the matter comes up in Congress. I appreciate
very much your sending me the clip- 02409
